“And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. God called the light ‘day,’ and the darkness he called ‘night.’ And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.”

-Genesis 1:3-5

Finally, God speaks and his Word is made known.  John makes it clear that Jesus, or the Word, was “with God in the beginning” (John 1:2).  And so, we have the first appearance of the trinity.  The Father was speaking, the Son was the Word spoken, and the Spirit was hovering over the waters in preparation of what was to come.  God, in all of his fullness and radiance was starting what would become a very long and drawn out saga.
So, isn’t it interesting that God chooses to create light before anything else?  Before the sun, or the moon, or lamps; God creates light before he creates anything that can produce light.  When we think of light, most of us think of daylight.  We think of heading outside and basking in the sun’s warmth.  Yet, light was already in existence before the sun had ever produced a single ray.  We’re reminded here that the sun isn’t the real source of light.  God is the true source.  Any other source is just secondary.  It’s a knock-off.  Some things may have the appearance of truth but there is only one REAL light and that is Jesus Christ.
The moon doesn’t really give off any light, it just reflects the sun’s light.  It’s an illusion that the moon is bright.  In the same way, there are people today who give off the illusion of having the light.  They say we should love each other and live in peace.  They teach the same things that Jesus taught; but they’re just reflecting it.  They’re reflecting the light but they aren’t the light.  Jesus tells us in Matthew that “YOU are the light of the world” (5:14).  A reflection isn’t good enough.  Living a good life and following rules isn’t good enough.  John says that ” whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did” ( 1 John 2:6).  We must allow Christ to BE the light through us.  Not merely reflect it!
