December 1, 2016 – Our King is Coming
“Now it will come about that
In the last days
The mountain of the house of the LORD
Will be established as the chief of the mountains,
And will be raised above the hills;
And all the nations will stream to it.”
– Isaiah 2:2
Heaven Came Down…
When the Bible was written, people believed that the gods lived on the tops of mountains. Mountains were higher to the heavens and thus, logically the place where heaven and earth might meet. Because of this, mountains came to represent the presence of God. Think about some of the mountains in scripture: Moriah, Sinai, Zion.
- God’s angel appeared on Moriah and provided Abraham with a ram to sacrifice, saving his son Isaac.
- God’s glory came down on Sinai and gave Moses the law.
- God’s presence came to Zion and filled Solomon’s temple.
So, when Isaiah writes that “the mountain of the house of the Lord will be established as the chief of the mountains,” he isn’t saying that the tectonic plates are going to shift, sending Mount Zion up above Mount Everest. He’s talking about the presence of God.
In the ‘last days’, God’s presence is going to be made known in a special way. And it was. 2,000 years ago.
Jesus was the embodiment of God’s presence – the Word made flesh.
And after his resurrection, his Spirit came to dwell within each believer. In other words, we received the presence of God.
Heaven and earth met. The mountain of the house of the Lord was raised above the hills.
And that is the reality in which we now live. But it isn’t over.
And Is Coming…
It’s true. When we begin trusting King Jesus, we receive his presence. His Spirit empowers us. We carry God with us, wherever we go. But this isn’t all there is.
Something even greater is coming.
Before ascending, Jesus told his disciples, “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also” (John 14:3). We have a resurrection hope that reaches into eternity. Jesus is coming.
And when he does, his mountain won’t just be higher than the others, it will fill the whole earth. It will be the only mountain (Daniel 2:44-45).
Creation will be remade. Sin and selfishness and death and sickness and every other broken thing in this world will be eliminated.
And Heaven and Earth will, once again, be one.
In the Revelation, John described it this way “There will no longer be any curse; and the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and His bond-servants will serve Him; they will see His face, and His name will be on their foreheads. And there will no longer be any night; and they will not have need of the light of a lamp nor the light of the sun, because the Lord God will illumine them; and they will reign forever and ever.” – Revelation 22:3-5
So fear not. Be not anxious. Don’t worry.
Our King is coming.
